परिभाषा

कार्य-कारण कारणों और उनके प्रभावों के बीच की कड़ी है। भौतिकी में यह वह नियम है कि किसी भी संदर्भ-ढाँचे में प्रभाव कभी कारण से पहले नहीं आता।

समय-मॉडल का डायल कार्य-कारण की संरचना तय करता है: एक समय-रेखा, एक चक्र, एक छँटा हुआ वृक्ष, या एक साथ हर शाखा। हर एक में कंप्यूटिंग की अलग मात्रा लगती है। हर एक इसका अलग जवाब देता है कि कल को वैसे ही होना ज़रूरी था या नहीं।
