परिभाषा

चेतना व्यक्तिपरक अनुभव है: किसी दी हुई प्रणाली होने जैसा कुछ होना। इसे परिभाषित करना बहुत कठिन है और भौतिक शब्दों में समझाना भी।

आंतरिक जीवन की कटऑफ़ और मन-मॉडल मिलकर तय करते हैं कि किन सत्ताओं को अनुभव का श्रेय मिलता है, और कितना।

मॉडल में भूमिका

सैंडबॉक्स में एक डायल यह तय करता है कि कितनी चीज़ों का कोई भीतर (आंतरिक जीवन) है, और दूसरा यह कि हर एक का भीतर कितना है। दोनों एक कामचलाऊ पूर्वधारणा पर टिके हैं, जिसे पूरी साइट के लिए यहाँ एक बार कहा गया है: संगणनात्मक प्रकार्यवाद। यह वह दृष्टि है कि सही संगणन चलाना मन के लिए काफ़ी है। उस पूर्वधारणा पर, मॉडल वह कंप्यूटिंग नापता है जो किसी मन को चलाएगी। वह खुद अनुभव नहीं नापता, और जहाँ यह मायने रखता है वहाँ टाइलों पर “अटकल” का टैग है।
