स्वतंत्र इच्छा कर्ताओं की वह क्षमता है कि वे विकल्पों में से इस तरह चुनें कि नैतिक रूप से ज़िम्मेदार ठहरें। लिबर्टेरियन कहते हैं कि इसके लिए अनिश्चितता चाहिए। संगततावादी कहते हैं कि यह नियतिवाद के साथ मेल खाती है। कठोर नियतिवादी इसके होने से इनकार करते हैं।
