功能主义认为，一个心理状态由它的作用来定义：它如何与输入、输出和其他心理状态相联系。它在物理上由什么构成，并不重要。

“功能性”心智模型就是带了数字的功能主义：每个神经元是一个节点，每个突触是一个权重，其他任何东西都不表示。如果只有粗略的功能组织才重要，这一档就足以构成一个心智。如果更精细的物理细节才重要，你就需要更高的一档，一直到量子那一档。如果没有任何数字版本能有意识，就像塞尔和整合信息理论所说，那么没有哪一档行得通。
