Brain in a vat
Definition
A brain in a vat is a thought experiment about a brain with no body, fed simulated sensory input. It tests whether we can know we’re not in that situation. Hilary Putnam argued the scenario defeats itself, because of what our words can refer to.
On this site
The Brain in a Vat preset. The brain itself doesn’t count toward the total, and the world it senses fits in a few racks of GPUs.
Role in the model
The Brain in a Vat preset is the smallest simulation the sandbox can build: a real brain in base reality, with the world fed to it as sensory input. The brain does its own thinking, so only the world needs computing, and it fits in a few racks of GPUs.
